Burglaries can happen at any time of day. But what time is a burglar more likely to strike? Day or night?

The answer may surprise some people. Most studies show that burglaries tend to happen more during the day. There are a few reasons why this could be.

Burglars aren’t as noticed during the daytime. At night, when they are breaking in to someone’s home, they can easily be spotted because of outdoor lighting. During the day time when someone is opening a window to creep inside it won’t draw as much attention as it would if they were doing it during the night.

That is why outside lighting is such a deterrent for criminals. They don’t want to have unwanted attention when trying to sneak in to a home. Outside lighting around your home at night time makes it impossible for criminals to hide behind darkness.

Most crimes happen during the hours of 7 and 10 in the morning. Most burglars will wait outside your home until you leave for work or school. They want to be sure that they are alone when they break in to the home.

Many people feel that the reason so many daytime burglaries happen is because daytime offers the most opportunity. Avoid daytime burglaries by making sure that your doors and windows are always locked, even while you are home. Be sure to close your curtains and draperies so a thief won’t see something they think is worth stealing.

While the majority of research shows that daytime burglaries happen the most, there are a few studies that lean towards more night-time burglaries than daytime. Many thieves prefer the dark when the home does not have any outside lighting. Many thieves watch for these types of homes and they can easily break in to them while they occupants are away, with little fear of neighbors seeing them.

Even though the research has been contradicting, they all come to the same conclusion. Burglary can take place at any time of day. It is important to keep your family, home, and belongings safe by remembering to turn on your alarm system and other security measures.
