Traveling during the Holidays is a common occurrence. Traveling can take up a lot of your time, especially when traveling a long distance. Here are a few safety tips to remember on your trip.
Don’t travel alone. Traveling with more than one person is always the safest. If you don’t have a choice in the matter, don’t advertise that you are traveling by yourself.
Look for rest stops or gas stations that are well lit. The lighter the area, the less likely you are to be taken by surprise. Criminals don’t like hanging out at spots where they can easily be spotted.
Carry pepper spray. Pepper spray is not lethal, like a gun would be, but it can still get you out of a sticky situation if something does arise. If you would like that kind of extra precaution, pepper spray may be a good choice for you.
Have a partner stay up with you during night drives. Many accidents that happen because of a driver falling asleep are because the driver is the only one in the car awake. By assigning a partner to stay up with the driver, you are ensuring that falling asleep at the wheel is not an option.
If you don’t have the option of having someone help you stay awake while you drive, make sure you bring plenty of activities to help you stay awake. Eating sunflower seeds while listening to catchy Christmas music can be a good activity. Find something that helps keep your mind focused so you don’t get tired and hypnotized by the road.
Always carry a cell phone. If you don’t personally own a cell phone, borrow one. Even a cell phone that doesn’t currently have a plan can make 911 emergency phone calls.
Quick texts and phone calls are easy enough and is a good safeguard. Alerting your family of your whereabouts every few hours can really help if you have car trouble or other emergencies, and will keep them informed of any delays that may happen so they don’t worry.
