Home security and safety should be a priority of your life. Don’t let essential safety measures hang up your home safety. Here are some places to start on your goal for better home safety.
1. Have a working security alarm system. Installing a security alarm system will substantially cut down the risk of break-ins with your home. If you already have an alarm system, be sure to activate your alarm before you go to sleep at night, or any time you leave the property.
2. All external doors need to be secured. Outside doors shouldn’t be flimsy, but made out of sturdy materials so they aren’t a risk to your home safety. Doors that are reinforced and have peep holes are also another good security choice.
3. Lock your doors. Lock every entrance to your home, or garage. The garage door, and a door that is connected to the home from the garage, should have strong security locks installed and be very sturdy doors.
4. Keep all lawn mowers, rototillers, or other expensive gardening equipment locked out of sight. Motorbikes and bicycles should also be secured away. Anything that is left outside has the potential of being stolen, so be careful what you leave lying around outside.
5. Spare keys should not be easy to find. The point is to protect your home, but also have a way to get inside your home in case you lock yourself out or if you have an emergency. Instead of leaving them under your doormat, try leaving them with a trusted neighbor.
6. Up-to-date inventories are important in case of accidents. Keep an inventory with digital photos of your possessions. You can place these photos on a CD and keep the CD in a home safe or security deposit box for safe keeping.
7. It is hard to be prepared for emergencies. Home safety begins with taking extra precautions, so practice an emergency escape plan with your family. Children can really benefit from a run through of emergency escape plans in case of fires or earthquakes.
