Home Security Checklists:

Sometimes it is hard to know where to start with home security. Most people understand that choosing an alarm system will be very beneficial for your home. But what other things should be done to keep your home safe?

While there are many things that can be done to protect your home, sometimes having a checklist can help you find your way. Here are some of our ideas to make your home safer. Remember, most burglars choose homes that look like easy targets, so the key is to make your home appear secure.

All exterior doors need to have locks.
Install a deadbolt if you don’t already have one, and make sure it has at least 3 inch screws. A deadbolt should be installed at all access points of your home, including sliding doors.

Your doors should be solid wood or metal. If you have hollow wooden doors, replace them. They are too easy to penetrate and should only be used on doors inside the home.

Reinforce your door frames so they can’t be kicked in.
Be sure to have strong locks for your garage so burglars can’t break inside and steal anything from inside. Keep all of your tools locked up so burglars can’t use them to break inside your home.

Don’t close yourself off from your neighbors. It’s natural for you to want privacy by allowing your trees and shrubs to block off your home from people on the street. The problem is that burglars often use these as hiding places, so set up your yard so you can clearly see around your property.

Make sure that your inventory of your home is up to date.
It is a good precaution to take in case a burglar does make it inside your home. This information will help you know quickly what is missing so you can share it with your home insurance company and the police.

Finally, don’t forget to have a well-lit yard. Outdoor lighting should be placed at all the entrances to your home. You can use photosensitive lighting that will work as soon as it get dark, or motion detecting lights that can be triggered.
