Garage Door Safety

Your home and yard are not the only places that require safety measures to be performed. Garages can also serve as a place to cause injuries if safety precautions are not taken. Your car door, in particular, is an important piece of equipment that should be given extra safety attention.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that 4 children, on average, are killed every year by garage doors. It is necessary to properly take care of your garage door. Don’t risk injuries by not having a safe car door.

Car doors can harm, or even kill children by crushing them if they are not properly maintained. Garage car doors are the heaviest and largest doors you own. It is no wonder that injuries can happen quickly.

To avoid harm by your garage door, be sure that it can open and close correctly. Garage door openers are a very important and necessary safety tool against garage doors crushing children. Be sure that your door correctly reverses when it senses something before it touches the ground, by placing a piece of wood underneath it to test it out.

Garage doors can also pinch fingers. Most garage doors can quickly be opened with automatic door openers, to help children’s fingers from being pinched quickly. There are also garage doors that are designed to push fingers out of the way when the door hits the ground to avoid pinches.

Heavy springs are used to open and close garage doors. These springs won’t last forever, and will eventually wear down and snap. This break can cause serious injury to those inside the garage, or even cause damage to garage equipment or your cars.

To avoid harm or damage from a broken spring, take preventative measures before it breaks. When your garage door is closed you can thread a wire through the spring and tie it until it is secured. That way, if the spring does break it won’t fly across the garage, but will stay on the secured wire.

Garage doors can be a dangerous piece of equipment if not properly maintained. Be sure to take the time to inspect it every few months to make sure it is working properly. If you find any problems with it, correct them as soon as possible.

Things To Look Out For With Homeowners Insurance

When shopping around for homeowners insurance, it is important to know what you will be getting when you buy a homeowner insurance policy. There are always a variety of policies for you to choose from. Find one that works best for your home.

There are different ways to find homeowners insurance. Some people prefer to use reliable websites to view online quotes. Others decide to use local insurance agents.

Whatever you decide to do, be certain that you understand what your personal policy covers. A homeowners policy normally is meant to be an added measure of security. Its there to protect the homeowner against certain issues arise.

Most insurance policies will specifically mention certain perils or exclusions that are in your policy. Ask your agent or insurance company if any of these exceptions apply. They should be able to tell you exactly what your policy covers.

Most homeowners insurance policies can be divided into two important parts. One part is specifically for property protection, while the other is about liability protection. These areas are important to the protection of your home.

Property protection with homeowners insurance usually covers details of your home, garages or storage sheds. It will cover your home and personal property, as well as details of compensations that may be needed in case certain circumstances arise. You can normally receive additional coverage by adding endorsements to your policy.

Endorsements are used when you wish to add something to your policy. They can normally be added for an additional cost, and provide a little extra protection to your home. An example of an endorsement you can add to your home would be extra help rebuilding your home if something happened to it.

Also watch out for additional property coverage. Many homeowners insurance policies provide additional coverage for things such as removing debris off of your land. This additional coverage can be handy in case of theft, illegal use of credit cards, a collapse of your building, or other similar perils.

Liability coverage would include personal liability and medical payments. Personal liability covers you against any claims made against you due to accidents or injuries that happen on your property. Medical payments are meant to help pay expenses for those that are accidentally injured on your property regardless of whose fault it was.

Dangers of Christmas Tree Fires

Christmas wouldn’t feel like Christmas without the special treat of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. If you are like millions of other Americans around the country, then getting a real tree is a priority. If that is your case, there are certain safeguards you should take to prevent a fire from happening.

christmas_tree

When Christmas tree fires occur they often spread fast. As a result they can cause serious injuries and inflict intense damage to the home. Christmas tree fires have been the cause of over $13 million in property damage.

The cause of most Christmas tree fires is usually because of shorts in electrical lights or open flames. Keep matches or open flames away from the tree. Dry Christmas trees can be a major problem if not carefully watched.
.

When a Christmas tree is not properly taken care of and watered it can become a huge fire hazard. The Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and technology have researched what happens when fire reaches a dry tree.  The video on their website shows how quickly a Christmas tree fire can happen and spread.

According to their research it only takes three seconds to set the tree completely on fire. Within 40 seconds the entire room is erupted in deadly flames and harsh toxic smoke. It’s no wonder why 1 out of every 22 Christmas tree fires ended with death as compared to the average fire where its 1 death per 75 fires.

Thankfully the statistics show that Christmas trees that do catch on fire are a very small portion of the amount of live Christmas trees that are sold. The best way to prevent a fire from happening is to keep your tree properly watered. A well-hydrated tree has a great chance of not being able to catch on fire, even when it is intentionally lit.

Even if you have a well-hydrated tree it is important to remember a few basic principles. When you put on Christmas lights to decorate your tree, follow the instructions and don’t use too many. Never use worn light bulbs or candles.

Place the tree at least three feet away from any other heat source. Keep your tree away from a fireplace. Keep it out of direct contact with sunlight to avoid unnecessary water loss.
